Justin at his easel Award winning artist Justin Prigmore aims for paintings that are ecologically correct, as well as being artistically attractive. He has a Masters Degree in Ecology and is currently employed by the Cairngorms National Park Authority, where he works part-time as a Biodiversity Officer for the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP), the UK’s response to the Rio Earth Summit. Previously, he has worked as a field researcher for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
Born in 1974 in Wales, Justin currently lives in Carrbridge, Scotland. But it was on a gap year from University, while living in Colorado, that he re-discovered his love of painting wildlife. The wonderful galleries in the Rockies and particularly the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole had a profound effect on him and he has focused his attention on this genre of painting ever since.
Travel is an essential element of his work. He and his wife Carina have travelled throughout North America, including Western Canada and Alaska. They lived for a year in Northern Sweden and have travelled throughout Europe in search of ideas. In 2006 they visited Africa for the first time, taking them to see the phenomenal wildlife spectacles of Kenya and Tanzania. Their most recent adventures led them to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, where they met up with wolf researchers radio-tracking wild wolves in Yellowstone's northern range. Justin is exhibiting his work internationally in prestigious juried shows and galleries. In the United States, he has shown at the Bennington Center for the Arts, Vermont, who have purchased three of his pieces for their permanent collection and with the Society of Animal Artists, who have elected him as a signature member. His painting "The Standoff" has been purchased for the permanent collection of the Wildlife Experience Museum in Denver, Colorado. Justin has also shown his work at Trailside Galleries, the premier Western and Wildlife gallery in the US. Justin has also been juried into the “Wild in de Natuur” show in Holland, one of Europe's most prestigious exhibitions. He exhibits annually at the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art in Liverpool, where he was commended in 2004 and has also shown at the Biological Museum in Stockholm. In 2005 he was the winner of “Birdwatch Artist of the Year”, and the winner of “Wildscape, Artist of the Year, Editor’s Selection”.
Along with Carina, he has been commissioned to produce paintings for the World Wildlife Fund, Sweden, Svenska Rovdjursföreningen (the Swedish Predator Society) and the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project in Romania.
